Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, Inc.

Written by: Sue Small, Director FWHS
2006 Brevard Zoo Conservati on Fund Grant: $1,200

The Florida Wildlife Hospital’s Education project is called “O. W. L.” which stands for Our Wildlife Legacy. This is a program to teach children and adults about the importance of preserving our native wildlife and environment so that future generations can enjoy the beauty of both the wildlife and the habitat. Presentations consist of a PowerPoint program and live owls held under a special educational permit. We also provide age-appropriate educational handouts and brochures, both of which were funded by a Brevard Zoo conservation grant.

A middle school and a public library were the sites of our most recent presentations. Our next presentation will be a full day program for Girl Scouts. Displays and equipment funded by the Brevard Zoo Conservation Grant will enhance the experience for the scouts and provide additional educational opportunities.
Presentations will continue with school, scout, and civic groups, as well as for the general public at environmentalevents such as Earth Day celebrations and birding and wildlife festivals. The goal of our project is to teach how the human population of Brevard County can co-exist with our native wildlife for the benefit of both.
